Young people working to get ahead.
Teamwork. Competition. Market Share.It's the
JA Business Challenge!Taylor Institute for Direct Marketing
Polsky Building, Fifth Floor
University of Akron
The competition was fierce as high school students from surrounding North Central Ohio communities strategized to take home the coveted "Titan of Industry" trophy at the 2010 JA Business Challenge held at The University of Akron’s Taylor Institute for Direct Marketing.
More than 70 students from 13 different schools and 27 business volunteers assumed the role of CEO for a simulated company; their goal – to manage their company as effectively and efficiently as possible in the given economic scenario.
Students competed for scholarship dollars, a cash prize for their school, and a Titan of Industry Trophy to display with pride. In addition, the top 3 teams were given the opportunity to represent North Central Ohio in the JA Titan 2010 United States Virtual Competition.
The Bonus Scholarship Program gave students the opportunity to win additional scholarship dollars. The Program generated $2,000 in Bonus Scholarships for participating students!
Each team of students (or Company) was partnered with a business mentor to provide guidance and support during Rounds 1 & 2 of the competition. During Round 3, the teams were on their own while teachers and mentors watched the "company" rankings change from another room. The energy was high and excitement was intense!
At the end of the day, our Titans of Industry were announced, congratulations were given amongst handshakes and smiles, and promises of a rematch were made.

BONUS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
The chance to win scholarship money was the number one reason students participated in the 2009 Business Challenge
(according to student surveys)
The Bonus Scholarship Program will provide additional Scholarship Opportunities for participating teams while giving students the experience of raising “capital” for their company; a task that all entrepreneurs must successfully achieve before starting their own business.
The Bonus Scholarship funds will be divided equally between continued JA program funding (50%) and the Business Challenge Scholarship Fund (50%). The Bonus Scholarship Fund is monies awarded in addition to the Challenge prizes.

Goals of the JA Business Challenge:

1. Allow students a glimpse of managing a company and marketing a product in a competitive environment.
2. Place high school students in the CEO seat and increases their understanding of the world of business.
3. Reward students who outperform the competition in profit, sales, and market share with scholarships.
4. Team students with a business consultant who mentors the students for the day. This mentor will help students understand the competitive nature of the free enterprise system, learn how business decisions are made, and practice communication, and leadership skills.
Our goal with the JA Business Challenge is not only to help students meet business people and learn about operating a business, but to use the net proceeds for JA to provide more economic education programs to students in the local area.
NO EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED to play the game!!
